2021 Shared Value Summit Asia Pacifc Program

9.00am

Welcome | The future we choose

Join emcee Sara James and Shared Value Project CEO Sarah Downie as we kick-off the 2021 Shared Value Summit Asia Pacific – arguably our most important yet. We’ll explore this unique moment in time to determine a different future, whilst we have more agency and appetite for change than ever before.

Sara James / Summit Emcee

Sarah Downie / CEO, Shared Value Project

9.15am

Special address | A decade of shared value

In 2021, we mark 10 years of the global shared value movement. How quickly has business adopted this thinking? Which key issues has shared value helped to address, and what have been the key challenges? And how does shared value need to evolve to flex to the future of business? Shared value co-creator, Harvard Professor Mark Kramer, will examine these questions and more, as he reflects on the state of shared value, and how we can leverage our learnings to consider: where to next?

In conversation | A NextGen view: The new mandate for business

With increasing buying power – and as the biggest presence in the workforce today – millennials have a unique influence over the future of business. And with this, they’re helping to determine a different role for business in society – one which tilts the scales of profit and purpose; urging companies to consider how they move beyond doing no harm, to proactively create value for all stakeholders. So, what are the most important issues among young people, and how must business respond, to meet their hopes and expectations? Mark Kramer will be joined by emerging leaders and youth advocates, as we shift our focus towards the next decade of purpose-led business. Includes Q&A.

Panel discussion | Leading with purpose: Adapting to a new world

Growing social and environmental demands have raised expectations for business to act. Recent research shows that seven in 10 of us believe that CEOs should step in when Government doesn’t fix social problems, and eight in 10 expect CEOs to speak out on societal issues. In 2021 and beyond, it’s clear that leaders must evolve, or be left behind. We bring together three CEOs from diverse industries to discuss what modern leadership could (and perhaps should) look like?

Sandra Martínez / CEO, Nestlé Oceania

Damien Mu / CEO, AIA Australia & NZ

Kerryn Coker / Co-Chair Australasia Region, Arup

Narelle Hooper / Editor-in-chief, AICD Magazine (moderator)

11.45am

Panel discussion | The economics of impact: Is ESG the answer?

ESG is increasingly pitched as the answer to ensuring business accountability to environmental and social problems. However, some believe it’s more of a distraction rather than a true path to long-term impact. We explore the topic through a diverse investor lens, to consider how much weight the investor community REALLY puts on advancing social progress, whether this is viewed as risk mitigation or a means to drive significant business growth, and how investors can apply a shared value lens to ESG to bring materiality and impact jointly into focus. Includes Q&A.

Jennifer Buckley / Senior Managing Director, SEA Women’s Economic Empowerment Fund

Daniel Roarty / Chief Investment Officer, AllianceBernstein

Mary Delahunty / Head of Impact, HESTA

Insight | Thriving in a world of constant change: What the flux?

Having lost her parents at a young age, April Rinne had to quickly grasp the currency in letting go of a predetermined future, to make way for a ‘flux mindset’. April has helped individuals and organisations rethink and reshape their relationship with change and uncertainty by applying a flux mindset. Hear how you can see change as an opportunity, not a threat, and how by being grounded in your values you can do more than snap-back to strive forward and create The Future You Choose.

Presentation | Building a more circular Australia

As the world emerges from COVID-19, we face the challenge of finding our ‘next normal’. What if this new normal embraced circularity over a linear source, make, use, waste approach? According to new modelling from PwC, we could generate $1,860 billion in direct economic benefits over 20 years, whilst saving 165 million tonnes of CO2 per year by 2040. In this timely presentation, we explore the tangible economic opportunities available by adopting a circular economy model.

Track 1 | Mental ill-health: Tackling the hidden issue of loneliness

Delivered in partnership with major sponsor AIA Australia

The impacts of mental-ill health are ubiquitous, and range from resultant health challenges to loneliness, social isolation, unemployment and – at its worst – suicide.

Loneliness precedes mental ill-health, and yet it’s an issue that’s often overlooked. In fact, one in four Australians experiencing problematic levels of loneliness – and those who are lonelier – are more likely to develop mental health disorders.

In this thematic track, we hone in on loneliness as a critical health, social and economic issue that has both a cause and effect relationship with mental ill-health, and tackle the common misconceptions of this next critical issue facing Australians. We look at how shared value can bring focus to this challenge; particularly when our workforce is making such a rapid shift to remote working and it becomes more crucial than ever that we stay meaningfully connected, despite being more physically apart. Panel discussion to include Q&A.

Opening remarks

Steve Dimopoulos MP
/ Victorian Parliamentary Secretary for Mental Health

Issue in focus

Dr Michelle Lim / Scientific Chair, Ending Loneliness Together

Panel and Q&A: Solutions in action

Track 2 | Disaster preparedness: Valuing resilience

Delivered in partnership with supporting sponsors NAB and IAG

There is no denying that natural disasters are growing in frequency and severity, but how ready we are to face and recover from them is up to all of us. The issue of disaster resilience is a complex one with many interconnected challenges. In this thematic track, we will identify the challenges and opportunities, as well as the questions in need of answers if we are to create more resilient communities.

How do we enable individuals, businesses and communities to better prepare for future natural disasters? How do we co-design with communities in the driver’s seat? How do we incentivise people and businesses to invest in their resilience? How can we strengthen communities to be more resilient to natural disasters? And perhaps the most critical question is how we work together; as government, business, community and individuals, each playing our role to reduce the risk and severity of disasters in the future?

Can shared value provide a framework for meaningful cross-sectoral participation and help prove the value in building resilience? Panel discussion to include Q&A
